I’ve always been interested in knowing the weather forecast. To spruce up how I get the weather I adore using the award-winning Carrot Weather app for iOS. It’s an incredible app with a ton of personality and geeky data.
One cool feature of Carrot Weather is that you can connect it to your own personal weather station. Carrot supports both Netatmo and Tempest from Weather flow. I have been using a Netatmo system for over a year and let me save you some money. It’s garbage. Netatmo products are some of the most unreliable products I’ve come across. Not worth it.
I was pleased to learn that Carrot supports another Weather device from a company called Weatherflow. I ordered one from Amazon and set it up. The entire process took 5 min and now I have my own local weather forecast.
I have temporarily placed the Tempest in my garden, but I ordered this pole mount so that I can attach it to the side of my roof.
If you are like me and have a Rachio Sprinkler system (simply the best sprinkler system on the market), then you’ll be happy to find out that you can connect your Tempest Weather station to the Rachio system. Neat! This means that my watering schedule is impacted by local events such as rain.
The Tempest supports several measurements including wind, lightning, and light. It’s wireless and connects to a small USB-C powered base station (oh thank you for using USB-C). Best of all it charges via solar power and the battery lasts a few weeks. I will see how well mine does through the dark and cloudy winters of the PNWF but the good news is that Tempest makes some other power options including being able to charge via landscape low voltage wiring.
They have a nice and basic app for iOS. Once you get your Tempest set up you now get even more accurate local forecasts using their Nearcast Technology.
My Tempest has now joined all my other fellow weather nerds!
Now, the only downside is that the Tempest doesn’t have an Air Quality Sensor. For that purpose, I have just ordered a Purple Air Sensor. When I get that and set it up, I’ll be sure to review it.
You can buy the Tempest at Amazon (like I did)!
Oh wow, I just got a Tempest too!
Hi Carrot, purple or netatmo what do u thing?
